Being There
Have you ever been on the point of picking up the phone to call someone, then you decide not to, with the rationale
"I'll call her next week"
"It's his turn to call me"
"I'm always the person making the calls", etc?
Know what?...it could be that it was at that very moment that your phonecall was needed. Each person experiences different, and unpredictable, up and down moments in life, and it really helps when someone is there, if only at the end of a telephone line, to listen, empathise and encourage in our down times (and, of course, also to share in our up times!). who might be needing a phonecall from me/you right now?...why procrastinate? ...let's be there for someone.
So the first action to consider this month is
Of course, sometimes in this digital world it's the technology that takes precedence over real human contact. Ever sent an e-mail when picking up the phone would have been more appropriate? Ever e-mailed or phoned when going round, either to someone's desk or someone's house, would have been more beneficial?
As our friends and family experience their own roller-coaster of life, some extra human contact will almost always be helpful.
So this month's second action to consider is who would welcome a visit from me/you right now?...why procrastinate?...let's be there for someone.
The following poem comes from www.absolutelypoetry.com:
Being There
I never carved your name in stone
Or chipped initials in the bark
Of oaks to show the world I care
I prove my love by being there.
When tears of sadness fill your eyes
When others cast harsh words like stone
That sting and cut though they're untrue
I'm there to catch those stones for you.
When people turn their backs and hide
When deaf ears meet your cries for help
For someone who can understand
I'm there to lend a helping hand.
When all the world becomes too much
When everything is going wrong
And darkness spirals down to night
I'm there to guide you back to light.
I never carved your name in stone
Or chipped initials in the bark
But if you took my chest apart
Your name is there I cross my heart.
